“How did we not know you could sing?” That was the question singer/songwriter Staci Smith’s father tearfully asked when he finally heard one of her recordings for the first time. A rather surprising story for someone who grew up in a musical family, going on road trips that always included music in the car, or listening to the home stereo system at ear splitting volume with her brothers. Of course, there was the aforementioned father who was a member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and a great aunt who taught piano and played in her church until age 100 and so many other relatives who were and are musicians. All of this music going on in the family didn’t leave a lot of room for Staci’s voice to be heard. It was only after a family tragedy that she began to soar.
It has been over a decade since the loss of both her mother and grandmother turned Staci Smith’s life upside down. Her grief and Christian upbringing led her to look for joy in all circumstances. She realized that just like the book of Psalms which had brought her so much comfort, that music was one of the ways God brought comfort to her soul. In fact, Psalm 96:1 sums up it up best; “Sing unto the Lord a new song.” Staci began singing professionally and she released her first EP (Whisper to My Heart) in 2013 after participating in a mission trip to South Africa. That trip would become significant to both her personal and professional growth.
Staci connected with Kenn Mann during her trip, and he encouraged her to start songwriting and drawing upon her own personal experiences in writing her own lyrics. Kenn is also a Dove Award winning songwriter and Staci took his advice to heart. She has delved wholeheartedly into writing about the things that have left marks on her own life and heart that speak about joy, grief, love, hope for the future, being thankful, having faith and her own Christian journey. Staci has also enlisted the help of another Dove Award winner – Don Koch – and both men collaborated with her on her songwriting for her sophomore effort, “Count It All Joy.” The resulting EP due for release in December 2015 and also produced by Don Koch is an uplifting recording that will bring joy to anyone who hears it. The music video for the first single, “All Blessing and Glory Amen” is planned for a January 2016 release and the CD has generated interest for several licensing opportunities. Her songs can be heard on Christian Radio stations throughout the US and internationally.
Staci continues to work tirelessly on new songs and already planning on heading back into the studio to start her third EP. She’s also very excited about venturing into making music videos in the upcoming year. Outside of her music, Staci enjoys spending time singing with her own church choir, serving with Sonset ministries in the local community, photographing nature, with her family or at the beach. Even those moments living each day as a day the Lord has made continually inspire her to “sing a new song”. Stay tuned for more.
